A deposit that covers the timber
Quote the job, take a deposit against it, and the invoice shows what was paid up front and what is left. The materials are bought with their money rather than yours.

How do I take a deposit for materials before starting?
Record the deposit against the document. The invoice then shows the full price, what has been paid and the balance outstanding.
Can I invoice for a fence in metres rather than per panel?
Yes. A price-book line carries its own unit, so you can bill per panel, per metre or per day, whichever way you priced it.
What if the ground turns out to be concrete?
Add the extra digging as its own line before you send the invoice. It reads as work that happened rather than as a price that changed.
